With this week's issue, we're going to try something new. We're going to begin a series of articles which, taken together, will cover a large technical topic. Based on feedback we get from you, we may try it with additional topics or we may go back to just presenting random tips. So please let us know what you think.

It has also recently come to our attention that some people haven't been getting the full benefit of our newsletters because they've either forgotten or don't know their login information. If that's the case, you can always contact our technical support for help. They can reset your password or help with other login issues.

Main Tip - Understanding Color Space

Warning: This week's tip involves math concepts. (shudder)

We frequently get questions about whether to shoot in RAW or JPG. Opinions vary and there's certainly something to be said for each.

Quick Tip - Camera Support

Assuming your goal is sharp pictures, or at least controlled blur, most types of photography benefit from a well supported camera. (We also offer a mind map showing various kinds of camera support and the strengths/weaknesses of each.) In this article, we cover a handful of the more common tools for keeping a camera steady.

Photo Essay - Coney Island Polar Bear Club

You may have heard about so-called "polar bear clubs". Most think of ad-hoc clusters of people around the world who gather for a swim on New Year's Day. Well, there are also much more formal gatherings of these hearty creatures.

Coney Island Polar Bear Club

The Coney Island Polar Bear Club is one of the oldest and most active ongoing polar bear clubs going.

Trivia Bit - Roman Numerals

What number do you get if you add up all of the Roman numerals?

M D C L X V I = 1666

(1000 + 500 + 100 + 50 + 10 + 5 +1)

which just happens to be the year of the Great Fire of London!

Note that the Romans never had a number to describe zero. It simply wasn't a numerical concept to them. Hence the reason that use of Roman numerals died out and was overtaken by the Arabic number system.
